Pinot Gris - Pinot Grigio

pinot grapes

Pinot gris, called pinot grigio in Italy is a light skinned mutation of pinot noir. Pinot grigio has become one of the most popular wines on the market due to its refreshing and easy drinking style.

Most describe wine made from pinot gris as having aromas of citrus, nuts, and is perceived as 'round' and full bodied in the mouth.

Italy accounts for the largest share of imports of pinot grigio into the United States. The grape grows well in California, Oregon and Washington State. Good examples can be found from Texas, Colorado and New Mexico.

While most commonly labeled as pinot gris or pinot grigio, it is also known in Alsace as "Tokay d'Alsace (unrelated to Hungary's tokay grape). The best examples of pinot gris can age well and will develop added complexity over many years.
