Chardonnay

chardonnay grapes

Chardonnay is America's leading wine varietal based on annual sales. Few other wine grapes are made in more styles than chardonnay. Ranging from the traditional "Chablis" style with crisp acidity and mineral notes to the big buttery California style abounding in aromas of oak and ripe fruit.

Research indicates that the grape is indigenous to the Burgundy region of France, most notably, Chablis. Other French labels include Pouilly-Fuissé or Bourgone Blanc for the less expensive examples. Chardonnay is grown in every wine producing country in the world.

A fairly neutral grape, most of the flavor profiles associated with the grape attributed to the location where it is grown (terroir) and to winemaking practices such as fermenting and aging the wine in oak barrels.

Chardonnay is one of the three permitted grape varieties in French Champagne and is used extensively in sparkling wine production throughout the world.
