Cabernet Sauvignon

The cabernet family includes cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. While genetically related, each has a distinct flavor and aroma profile that is all its own. Grown throughout the world, cabernet is responsible for most of the great wines of Bordeaux, Napa and more recently the "Super Tuscan" wines coming from Italy.
Cabernet sauvignon is the leading red wine varietal by sales in the United States. It is often blended with merlot, cabernet franc and a little malbec or petite verdot to balance the harsh tannins cabernet sauvignon is know for.
A few wineries in the Napa Valley have achieved cult status with their renditions of cabernet sauvignon. These prized vineyards are located on the hillsides above the valley floor. Grapes grown in the fertile soils of the valley floor tend to be fruity and not as complex as their hillside counterparts. Many of these valley floor wines benefit from the reputation of the better wines and consumers should be aware that many of these wines are over prices and not as enjoyable as the better vineyard locations.
